College Is Out for Summer… But Is College the Right Fit?

Broadcast Media School, Filmmaking School, News, Social Media Marketing School, Web Development School

As students head home for the summer, many are taking a hard look at their college experience. For some, the excitement of freshman year has given way to a difficult question:

“Am I spending all this money to learn what I actually want to do?”

It’s a fair question.

Across the country, students are finding themselves enrolled in courses that have little connection to their career goals. While general education requirements have long been part of the traditional college model, many students become frustrated when they realize they must spend years—and thousands of dollars—taking classes unrelated to the field they are passionate about.

A student who wants to work in video production may spend semesters taking courses outside of media. A future broadcaster may find themselves waiting years before getting meaningful time behind a microphone or camera. For creative students eager to build skills, that can feel like a long road to get to the “meat” of what they really want to learn.

Not Everyone Learns Through Lectures

Another challenge is that traditional college classrooms aren’t the ideal learning environment for everyone.

Some students thrive in lecture halls, note-taking, and textbook learning. Others learn best by doing.

They want to:

  • Operate cameras
  • Edit videos
  • Produce podcasts
  • Work in recording studios
  • Create social media content
  • Build projects with their own hands

For these students, sitting through lectures may not be the most effective path to success.

A Different Approach to Education

That’s where career-focused schools and trade programs are gaining attention.

At CSB Media Arts Center, students learn by creating. Rather than waiting years to gain practical experience, they begin working with industry equipment and software from the start.

Whether the goal is:

  • Sports Broadcasting
  • Audio & Video Production
  • Filmmaking
  • Social Media Marketing
  • Podcasting
  • Radio Broadcasting

students spend their time building real-world skills and portfolio projects that can help them enter the workforce faster.

The Question Worth Asking This Summer

College is a great path for many people. But it’s not the only path.

If you’re home this summer wondering whether the traditional college experience is delivering what you expected, it may be worth exploring alternatives that match your learning style and career goals.

The most important question isn’t:

“What is everyone else doing?”

It’s:

“What’s the best way for me to learn and build the future I want?”

For students who are creative, hands-on, and eager to start producing from day one, a career-focused education may be the better fit.

This summer could be the perfect time to explore all of your options—and discover a path that gets you closer to doing what you love.
